Sneak Peek Inside Wabash Trailers

Steve-Eric Wabash tour-crop

Ever wonder what it takes to build a Wabash Trailer?

We had the honor of being invited out to Lafayette Indiana to attend the Wabash Dealer Meeting and get a tour of the newly renovated, state-of-the-art trailer manufacturing plant.

It was amazing to witness how Wabash has embraced automation and robotics to improve craftsmanship and overall efficiency in the production process.

By automating or eliminating manual processes, Wabash has been able to design processes that reduce safety risks in production. Specific improvements include:

  • Eliminating the need to manually cut material with saws and routers by up to 100,000 cuts per year
  • Eliminating manual setting of over six million sidewall rivets per year
  • Eliminating manual drilling of 19 million holes per year
  • Eliminating forklift deliveries to the production line
  • Eliminating or significantly mitigating known trip hazards
  • Substantially reducing manual-use power tools

Much of the automation is proprietary, so we cannot show some of the detailed systems in place. But it was an amazing experience, and we are thrilled to be a part of the distribution network for Wabash. This event has made us appreciate the Wabash dry van trailers and with our up-close and personal visit, we can see how they are one of the best in the business. The automation and production assembly design gives Wabash trailers improved fit and finish and results in shorter and more consistent cycle times.
