CVSA 2024 Roadcheck: Be Ready!

CVSA Roadcheck logo

The annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is gearing up for the CVSA 2024 Roadcheck this May. Will your fleet be ready?

Be prepared to have your trucks pulled into patrolled weight stations across the US, Canada and Mexico any time during the 3-day CVSA 2024 Roadcheck behing held May 14-16. Local law enforcement will carry out the 37-point safety inspection process with commercial motor vehicles and drivers. As in previous years, the CVSA selects a specific area of emphasis to help drive awareness. For 2024, they will be focused on tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substance possession.

Driver Evaluation

This focus on the driver follows an alarming trend in the growing number of prohibited drivers in the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH) database. The CVSA hopes this heightened awareness will make fleet owners and managers consider regularly reviewing this public list to ensure their drivers are not in prohibited status. Be sure you have clear policies in place for controlled substance and alcohol possession and carry through with any ramifications for breaking the policy. Inspectors have been trained and will be vigilant in their inspection and detection of drivers in violation.

During the driver portion of the inspection, have your drivers prepared to share their operating credentials, all driver logs and hours-of-operation, DACH status, seat belt usage and be evaluated for any impairment. Any infraction of this portion of the inspection could cause the driver to be restricted from operating their vehicle.

Vehicle Inspection

The second aspect of the 2024 CVSA Inspection is focused on tractor protection systems, including the truck protection valve, trailer supply valve and anti-bleed valve. These items are often times overlooked during routine pre-trip and roadside inspections. These areas should be a focus for anyone – drivers, fleet owners and managers, technicians and law enforcement – to ensure the safety of everyone sharing the road with the trucks that keep our economy moving.

To assist fleets with inspecting and maintaining critical tractor protection components, the CVSA has created a helpful guide for properly checking these systems. Check out the detailed CVSA Tractor Protection System Inspection Bulletin.
