CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week Returns

CVSA Safe Driver Week

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) annual Operation Safe Week is officially scheduled for the week of July 12th-18th, 2026.

During this weeklong enforcement and education campaign, law enforcement agencies across North America will increase roadside monitoring for unsafe driving behaviors committed by both commercial and passenger motor vehicles drivers.

This year’s focus is on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving behaviors that continue to contribute to preventable crashes and roadway crashes and fatalities. Drivers that exhibit unsafe behaviors may receive warnings, citations, or be placed out of service depending on the severity of the violation

What Law Enforcement Will Be Watching For?

Throughout Operation Safe Driver Week, officers will be paying close attention to high-risk driving habits that include:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving and cellphone use
  • Follow too closely
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Failure to wear a seatbelt
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Aggressive driving behaviors
  • Failure to obey traffic signals or signs

According to CVSA, reckless driving involves operating a vehicle with willful disregard for the safety of others or property, while careless or dangerous driving refers to driving without proper attention or reasonable consideration for others on the road.

Why This Week Matters?

Driver behavior remains one of the leading causes of roadway accidents. CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Program aims to improve roadway safety through a combination of education, driver awareness, and targeted traffic enforcement.

Recent statistics continue to highlight the importance of safe driving habits. The U.S. recorded 36,640 traffic fatalities in 2025. That only increase when you add in the stats from Canada and Mexico.

These statistics reinforce the need for both commercial fleets and everyday drivers to remain alert, patient, and safety-focused behind the wheel.

Safety Tips for Drivers and Fleets

As Operation Safe Driver Week approaches, now is the perfect time for fleets and drivers to reinforce safe driving habits. A few reminders include:

  • Eliminate distractions while driving
  • Maintaining safe following distances
  • Avoid aggressive driving behaviors
  • Plan routes and schedules to reduce fatigue
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections
  • Always wear seatbelts
  • Slow down in work zones and poor weather conditions
  • Stay aware of surrounding traffic and blind spots

Fleets can also utilize telematics and driver monitoring technology to identify risky behaviors such as hard braking, speeding, harsh cornering, and rapid acceleration before they become larger safety concerns.

Stay Prepared This July

Operation Safe Driver Week, serves as an important reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you operate a commercial vehicle or drive a passenger car, practicing defensive driving and staying focused behind the wheel helps protect everyone on the road.

As enforcement efforts increase July 12-18, drivers and fleets should take proactive steps to ensure compliance, reduce violations, and promote a stronger culture of roadway safety.
