May 16-18 is the 2023 CVSA International Roadcheck

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance – CVSA International Roadcheck will take place May 16-18, 2023. During the 3-day roadcheck, inspectors from the CVSA, along with local law enforcement, will perform their usual 37-point roadside safety inspection of commercial motor vehicles and drivers, but will have a primary focus on to highlight the importance of those aspects of vehicle safety.  This annual event is a  very visable way to educate motor carriers and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operation.

Antilock Braking Systems:

ABS-WARNING-LIGHT

It is important to note that while ABS violations are not an out of service violation, they are still significant to the safety of the commercial truck driver and those on the road around them. Antilock braking systems help to reduce the chance of collisions by preventing the wheels from locking up or skidding during a hard brake.

What you can do to prepare.

Be sure your drivers are paying close attention to the ABS Warning Light during pre- and post-trip inspections. If the warning light fails to lightup during diagnostic checks, or if it remains lit while the vehicle is moving, this is indicates there is an issue with the ABS and it should be taken into a reputable repair shop to run the codes and make the necessary repairs.

cargo securement:

cargo securement

Whether you are hauling a dry freight van full of pallets or a flatbed with raw materials, securing your load is of the utmost importance. Not only is an inadequately secured load dangerous, it can be costly with damaged goods.  The CVSA did not pull this one out of nowhere. Improper load containment was the cause of 10.6% of 2022 violations resulting in out-of service citations, which is why inspectors will be paying close attention this year.

What you can do to prepare.

Inspection of cargo securement devices is important. Excessive wear could mean compromised security down the road. Drivers should not only check cargo securement in pre-trip inspections, but periodically throughout the trip to account for any shifting of freight.

Enforce your Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections

Pre-Trip-Inspection

One of the best ways to keep your drivers and equipment safe on the road is by enforcing the pre- and post-trip inspection process. It’s the first and last thing your drivers should do while on the job.  Inspecting the truck and trailer, as well as all major systems isn’t just a “good idea”, it is federally required and must be documented in the driver logbook/ELD. It is a quick 15-minutes that could save time, money and possibly a life.

Perform a visual inspection to see if anything looks damaged or out of place. Check your trim such as your mirror brackets, doors, windows, steps and weather stripping to ensure everything is working.

Check all lights to ensure that they are working properly. Look for any cracked or fogged lenses.

Inspect your water pump, radiator, air compressor and power steer pump for any leaks or damage. Check your fluid levels as well as your belts and hoses for any cracking or leaks.

Check the air pressure in your tires to make sure they are at the recommended PSI, and inspect the tires for any defects such as bumps, cuts or abrasions as well as nails and tread depth.

Look at your truck’s brake shoes and drums to make sure they are not cracked or damaged. Test your brakes, making sure you push your brake knobs in before testing. Perform a static brake check, applied pressure test, low pressure warning test, and check your emergency valves.

Inspect your windshield, mirror controls, hazard signals, turn signals and gauges to ensure everything is working properly.

Ensure that the engine is running properly by revving the engine and testing your horns.

When you review the inspection process and remind your drivers of the importance, be sure to update them on the upcoming CVSA Roadcheck event. Your equipment will be well on its way to getting the 2023 CVSA sticker for passing the inspection.
