Tire retread process

The commercial tire retread process is a series of steps that improves safety by ensuring only quality tire casings are used. We inspect, mechanically buff the casing to the correct radius and diameter, attach a new tread to the casing, and paint the casing before returning to you.

Every tire undergoes an inspection to identify if it is eligible for retreading. During the inspection, a technician will determine if repairs are necessary. Tire casings with severe damage are not suitable for the process. In this event, we can return the tire to you or provide disposal (with casing credits where applicable). If a casing is eligible for retreading but a repair is required, the damage is marked and the casing moves to the next step.

During this step, the casing receives its repair(s). Examples of common repairs include nail holes and road hazard punctures. If the casing steel and fabric are not damaged, spot repairs can be performed without limit. Section repairs can also be performed, but these have a limit. When all tire repairs are complete, the casing moves to the third step.

The old tread is mechanically buffed away to the proper radius and diameter. During this stage, it’s possible for the technician to find foreign objects embedded deep in the casing, such as glass shards. These are removed and repairs are made as necessary. Once buffed, the tire must remain clean and cannot touch the ground.

The new tread is applied to the casing. The application process varies depending on if the casing is receiving a pre-cure tread or mold cure tread. Both types of tread will require curing, the next step.

The tire is put into a temperature and pressure controlled chamber for a specified amount of time.

The casing receives its paint and is ready for return.
